Milestones for Transition to Adulthood

Healthy transition from childhood to adulthood is a time of social, emotional physical, and cognitive independence and change.
Typical:
Looking forward to graduating from High School
Learning how to drive a car
Changing from a pediatric doctor to a medical doctor
Looking for the first part-time job
Deciding on college and or career that may be
Developing relationship with the opposite sex and looking forward to future goals
Physical Skills:
Completes physical maturation
Increase in sexual desires/drives
At age 18, full height attained
Cognitive Skills:
Thinks about the future
Begins to integrate knowledge leading to decisions about the future
Understands abstract concepts
Aware of consequences and personal limitations
Social Skills:
Relationship with parents can range from friendly to hostile
Has many friends and few confidants
Dates actively
Varies in level of maturity
Enjoys activities with the opposite sex
Develops new skills, hobbies, and adult interests
Emotional Skills:
Worries about the future
May appear moody and express many emotions
Has conflicting feelings between dependence and independence
Work Skills:
Able to learn a trade, work, and/or pursue higher education
Identify with career goals
Prepares to achieve those goals
Housing/residential skills:
Will start to look where they would like to live
May make plans to live with others, or at school, or save money and live at home
